ZTE Nubia Z9 5.2 inch bezel-less display and FIT technology using experience: Stunning visual effect and special edge touch gestures, but difficult to operate

Since LeTV phone’s announce, the ‘bezel-less’ concept once become the most the key word of the first half of 2015 which got most hits. However, unlike LeTV’s ‘bezel-less’ design, the ture bezel-less flagship that Nubia Z9 that NUbia released is not only bezel-less on visual effect, the phone also increased the special edge touch gestures on its frame which was known as FIT
(Frame Interactive Technology). So how is the actual experience of this bezele-less flagship? Let me unveil it to you.

Nubia Z9

Since the ‘bezel-less’ design is the phone’s biggest highlight, is Nubia Z9 really bezel-less? In fact, Nubia adopted its own aRC(Arc Refractive Conduction) technology on Z9 to realize the bezel-less visual effect. Which is to intelligently hide the real black edges of the screen via the refraction of its curved glass. If we look inside the screen from its side, we can find that Z9 does have frame, it is just the frame is super super narrow.

▲ Observing from low angel, the frame of Z9 is still there. We can still clearly see that the frame creates an illusion of bezel-less curved screen by refraction.

▲ The curved screen of Nubia Z9 looks very beautiful, like water to spill out of the illusion.

▲ Comparing with the ‘bezel-less’ of LeTV, Nubia Z9 cares more about the visual experience of the no border display. If just looking from the upfront, the visual compact of Nubia’s beze-less is very huge. You will be totally amazed by it at the first glance.

As Nubia Z9 adopted bezel-less design, it certaily designed its special touch gestures for the phone’s edge which Nubia called it FIT (Frame Interactive Technology). Users can slide the edges of the screen to make convenient operation.

However, it takes some time to learn the FIT edge gestures. In the setting of egde gestures, we can see there are mainly three modes, “edge slide”, “one hand grip” and “landscape hands grip”.

▲ The one hand grip gestures are very difficult to operate and hard to succeed as well.

Nubia Z9

▲ The gesture that 2 hands operate to start the camera in landscape hands grip mode is also difficult to succeed

Will you be a little dizzy when seeing so many gestures but don’t know how to oeprate? Although the intention to set these covenient gestures especially for the bezel-less feature is pretty nice, we have to admit it really takes time to learn and the success rate of the gestures needs to be improved.

Indeed, what Nubia Z9 brings is more shocking on visual effect. During actual use, the maloperation caused by the bezel-less design happens now and then. Especially when in edge slide mode, the chances of maloperation are greatly increased.

Nubia Z9

▲ The quick gesture at the edge of the screen is very easy to cause maloperation. When browsing photo albums, you may find it maltouch easily to make the clloection item comes out.

Nubia Z9

▲ The success rate of the gesture to start the camera in landscape hands mode is not high. And it may occur to maltouch other icons.

Nubia Z9

▲ Nubia did not make some optimization towards the edge maltouch like iPad. It would easily touch the icon in the lower left corner when you intends to click the icon in the upper right corner.

Needless to say, the bezel-less design that Nubia Z9 tried is very commendable and a great innovation. No matter on appearance design or on FIT gestures, Z9 has provided infinite possibilities to the future. But from the time being, the solution of Nubia Z9’s bezel-less operation is not perfect. The success rate and maltouch rate in daily use need to be better. What do you say?
