OnePlus X Review

‘Exquisite’ and ‘Small yet Beautiful’ are the words that would pop up in people’s mind, when first saw OnePlus X smartphone. OnePlus phones always give us the impression of elegant and clean, while this feature is obvious to see on OnePlus X. In the era of large screen smartphones today, fewer and fewer manufacturers would release a small screen device, let alone an exquisite small screen smartphone like OnePlus X. It is exquisite not only because of its affordable price, also beautiful appearance, elaborate craftsmanship, outstanding configuration and excellent using experience. You will have an answer about whether it is a boutique small screen smartphone after reading this review.

OnePlus X

Let’s take a look at its basic specs firstly. OnePlus X uses a 5.0 inch Super AMOLED screen, with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels and 441PPI. It runs Snapdragon 801 quad core processor along with 2GB RAM+16GB ROM(standard version)/3GB RAM+16GB ROM(Enhanced version, Ceramic Version), supporting storage expansion up to 128GB via MicroSD card. The handset has 8.0MP front camera and 13.0MP rear camera, the battery capacity is 2525mAh. On the whole, the configuration of OnePlus X is pretty nice. As a sub-flagship device, Snapdragon 801 processor is still a nice choice, even enough for large games.

OnePlus X

You can basically feel the idea put in OnePlus X at the begining of unboxing. Although 2.5D curved screen+metal bezel design is not really a rare thing, it is the first time using on OnePlus phone. Maybe not everyone would really care such design, but OnePlus X is exactly exquisite and beautiful.

OnePlus X

OnePlus X changed the straight and right-angled trimming design in to curved and round corner design, making the whole phone looks pretty chubby. While the well crafted metal bezel makes the phone more exquiste. One the whole, OnePlus X is very comfortable to touch. The round 2.5D glass and sharp metal edges combined naturally, smooth to touch.

OnePlus X

The 14 elaborate Arles textures on the bezel is cutted with CNC techology, which looks so textures in the light and full of layering sense. Meanwhile, this also differ the phone from other 2.5D glass+metal bezel design smartphones.

OnePlus X

OnePlus X’s front panel is pretty simple, the front camera, earpiece and sensor are in a line above the screen.

OnePlus X

What under the screen is the 3 original Android buttons, using touch-type button design and redrawing the appearance of the button to make it look more harmonious.

OnePlus X

On the back of the phone, the 13MP main camera is in the upper-left corner, with a LED Flash. What in the middle is the OnePlus Logo, withe the same color as the bezel.

OnePlus X

What at the left side of OnePlus X is the SIM card slot opening, Volume button and Power button. The layout of the buttons is quite reasonable, very suited to single-handed operation. In addition, all these buttons use concentric circle pattern design, pretty in accord with the Arles texture, exquisite again.

OnePlus X

The Mute button is at the left side of the phone, what different from the buttons at the right side is it is coved with cross grain, not looking so harmonious as the concentric circle pattern. This Mute button uses three-piece design, you can switch to Mute mode, No-disturb mode and Normal mode. It has a crispy response while switching.

OnePlus X

Similar to many phones, OnePlus X’s speaker is set at the phone’s bottom and it uses symmetrical design. What in between the Symmetrical design is the USB port, it is pitiful that OnePlus X did not use Type-C port. It is not difficult to make small size phones, what difficult is not to compromise the appearance design for the size. Apparently, OnePlus X did not make compromise and still hold an unique beauty of itself.

OnePlus One and OnePlus 2 both use LCD screen at 5.5 inch. While the screen material and size on OnePlus X both changed on OnePlus X this time. The phone takes 5.0 inch display with 1920×1080 pixels resolution and 441 PPI, using Super AMOLED material. Meanwhile, the official also claims that it has a contrast ratio of 21000:1. Comparing with IPS screen, AMOLED screen is more advantageous on contrast ratio and viewing angle. It will not have a light leak, but on brightness, it is less powerful than LCD screens at the same level.

OnePlus X’s screen display is a little colder. This style appeared both on OnePlus One and OnePlus Two. But OnePlus X lacks the screen color temperature adjusting function this time.

The display performance of Black is the biggest advantage of AMOLED screen, looking so pure. While displaying images with large more black, the screen would be at a power-saving state.

From the pictures, we can see the color transition is natural and smooth, with very high saturation and the effect is pretty favorable.

During viewing-angle test, we can see the advantage of AMOLED screen. The brightness reduction is less obvious than LCD screen under low angle, the visuality remains on a high level for normal operation. While in public, it may be easy to expose privacy.

The UI design of H₂ OS is more brief than simple. It chose square, circle and triangle to build a simple combination, with the eye-catching but not too bright Eight-color system. It is the thorough flat and brief design.

24 25

The main interface of H₂ OS consists of H₂ OS window and sudoku icons and it removed Dock bar, leaving a brief impression. Long press the H₂ OS window allows you to change the theme pictures and clock styles freely. Meanwhile, the system would choose colors from the theme pictures for users to pick background color.

26 27

Unlike most Android smartphones, the shortcut switch of the drop-down menu of H₂ OS is moved to Drag Menu. Drop-down Meu simply display the notification function, date, carrier and so on. While, in addition to Shortcut switch, Drag Menu also includes the accesses to Flashlight, Calculator, Camera and other common functions.

28 29

The interaction logic of H₂ OS is not complicated at all, quite easy to learn for any Android user. In the era of Android 5.0, swiping is the most common used interaction operation, while H₂ OS highlights such swiping-type interaction more, offering more pleasant feelings during operating.

30 31

OnePlus X takes 8.0MP front camera with 84 degrees wide angle, can include many faces in one selfie and supports Beautify function. The 13.0MP rear camera is with F2.2 apeture, increased PDAF technology. The offcial claimed it can implement focus as fast as 0.2s. Meanwhile it also added Blue glass filter to filer false light, with single LED Flash.

32 33

34 35

The camera interface of the phone is quite simple, swipe left to choose shooting mode and swipe right to check the recent pictures. The functions are not that rich, but will meet most people’s needs. It’s less interesting that OnePlus X does not have the Manual mode as OnePlus 2.

36 37

Under default mode, the camera style is quite bold, there would appear overexposure once in a while. But the picture looks so bright, under the blue-sky, it looks more comfortable.

38 39

Maybe because the Firmware still needs to be improved, there is inaccurate white-balance at some scenes, like the one above.

41 40 42

PDAF system is faster than other ordinary ones. During the focus, you can reduce the distance that the Sub lens move front and back. Although it is slower than the Laser Focus system of OnePlus 2, it only works while shooting the subjects in 50cm. In comaprsion, the PDAF of OnePlus X is more practical.

43 44

One the whole, OnePlus X’s shooting performance is quite excellent, the color style looks comfortable. The PDAF makes the shooting surprising and interesting.

OnePlus X’s hardware configuration is same as the OnePlus One, both use the Snapdragon 801 processor as solution. Although this is the last falsghip product of Qualcomm, its actual performance stil can rival against the top-level model of MTK. For instance, on the processing efficiency of single thread, Sanpdragon 810 is very advantageous. Snapdragon 801 processor has 4 physical cores, running at 2.3GHz(OnePlus One’s Snapdragon 801 is 2.5GHz), GPU is Adreno 330 with great compatibility.

45 46

On RAM, the basic version is 2GB LP-DDR3 and standard/ceramic version is 3GB LP-DDR3, all with 16GB ROM, supporting memory expansion up to 128GB via Micro SD card.

47 48 49 50 51 52

From the Bechmarking, we can tell that performance is not the biggest highlight of the OnePlus X. Still, for most users, it is enough to deal with all kinds of APPs smoothly, even the 3D games.

OnePlus X

The review this time ends here. We believe most of you will have an answer that if OnePlus X is the annual flagship of boutique small screen smartphones. We judge a smartphone excellent or not, not only by its hardware, also from the humanized design, stability, easy-to-use and more aspects. While OnePlus X is just the masterpiece of all these features. The delicate design and elaborate craftsmanship definitely make the phone stand out in the crowd.
